Richard Smith MVO - Blything

I have been a County Councillor since 2010 and represent the Blything Division, which consists of the town of Saxmundham (where I live) and twelve villages to the north – Blythburgh, Bramfield, Darsham, Dunwich, Kelsale-cum-Carlton, Middleton, Theberton, Thorington, Walberswick, Wenhaston, Westleton and Yoxford.

I serve as the Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets, responsible for the County Council’s spending in Suffolk of around £500 million each year. I believe in asking Suffolk’s residents to pay the lowest rate of Council Tax each year that is needed to meet our essential expenditure.

My background is as an accountant, although I ran my own bookshop in Saxmundham for 10 years, which satisfied my love of books and reading.

I try to have a good relationship with my constituents by attending Town and Parish Council meetings whenever I can. I also write a monthly article on topical matters for Saxmundham News. I try to help with traffic problems of all kinds, especially speeding through villages or inappropriate use of roads by lorries. Community Speed Watch schemes help tackle these problems, but ultimately better and more responsible driver behaviour has to be the answer. I am also leading the development of a new community facility in Street Farm Road, Saxmundham.
